Make Your Own Tincture β€” Basics

1. Fill the jar β€” pack fresh herb loosely or dried herb to about 1/3–1/2 of a clean glass jar.

2. Add menstruum β€” pour alcohol (vodka/brandy) over the herb to cover by ~1 inch.

3. Steep β€” seal, store in a cool dark place, shake daily for 4–6 weeks.

4. Strain β€” pour through muslin/cheesecloth, squeeze out liquid, bottle in dark dropper bottles.

Ratios (weight:menstruum): fresh herb β‰ˆ 1:2 Β· dried herb β‰ˆ 1:5.

Alcohol strength: fresh herbs β†’ 50–60% ABV Β· dried herbs β†’ 40–50% ABV.

Non-alcohol option: use vegetable glycerin (glycerite) or apple cider vinegar.

Dose: a typical adult dose is 20–40 drops (1–2 mL), 1–3Γ— daily, in water.
